Younger Smokers On Fast Track To Behavior Problems Later

Adolescents world Health Organization have tried cigarettes by seventh grade are often more likely to suit regular smokers and have got behavior problems as teens, a new study finds.

"We were stricken by the degree to which early smoking appeared to indicate that kids were on the fast track toward a troubled adolescence," aforesaid Phyllis Ellickson, Ph.D., world Health Organization led the team of researchers at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, Calif. "We wanted to find out what factors in early and after adolescence mightiness help these high-risk kids avoid negative consequences."

The report appears in the October issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health.

The researchers collected data at seventh, 10th and 12th ground level from 2,000 students in California and Oregon who were early smokers in middle school. They tested the students' saliva samples for tobacco and marijuana to ensure accuracy.

At the beginning of middle school, 30 percent of the early smokers had recently used cigarettes, 14 percent were smoking regularly and 21 percent had multiple school problems, the authors wrote.

Ellickson and her colleagues ground that having peers world Health Organization smoke was a strong risk factor for becoming a regular smoker. At-risk teens were two or more times likely than low-risk teens those world Health Organization hadn't tested smoking by seventh grade to have peers wHO smoke and five times more likely to have had deuce or more problems in school.

"At grade seven, problems in school included being sent out of the classroom more than than once, skipping school multiple times and absenteeism," Ellickson said.

By the end of high school, 36 percent of early smokers were smoking regularly and 58 per centum had engaged in two or more problem behaviors, including tear drinking, abusing and marketing drugs and dropping extinct of schooling, according to the study.

The researchers constitute that teens who had not tried smoking by seventh level were 1.5 times more likely to be those wHO had ripe grades and lived in an integral family. In other words, good grades B or higher and living in an intact nuclear syndicate helped protect early smokers against these negative outcomes.

The RAND researchers complete that teens whose parents disapproved of smoking and drug exercise had depress risks of problem behavior. They suggested that universal prevention programs that target peer resistance and parental involvement could help turnabout the trends found in the study.

Jeanie Alter, platform manager and lead evaluator of the Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University's School or Health, Physical Education and Recreation, agreed that prevention programs can benefit teens at risk and stressed that the parents' role is key.

"Clearly, peers are an influential factor in the lives of young the great unwashed, particularly as they progress through adolescence," she aforesaid. "However, it is critical to acknowledge the significant and free burning influence of parents. Though difficult to implement, programme planners plainly must imply parents and increase their disapproval of drug use."

Anthera Pharmaceuticals
Inc., a privately held biopharmaceutical company developing
anti-inflammatory drug drugs, announced the installation of the FRANCIS
(Fewer Recurrent Acute coronary events with Near-term Cardiovascular
Inflammation Suppression) clinical trial designed to analyse the encroachment of
varespladib when administered to patients within 96 hours of an Acute
Coronary Syndrome (ACS) event.

The FRANCIS trial is designed to assess the impact of oral varespladib
on known biological markers of cardiovascular risk. It will enroll up to
500 patients that volition be treated for a minimum of six months. The survey
will be conducted at sites in North America and Europe. FRANCIS testament
provide insight into the prevention of secondary Major Adverse
Cardiovascular Events (MACE) over the duration of the test. In this study,
MACE is defined as a composite termination consisting of cardiovascular expiry,
non-fatal cam stroke, non-fatal myocardial infarction, unstable angina, and a
subset of revascularization following the initial upshot. During the course
of the study, patients volition receive therapeutic standard of care in
addition to high dosage Lipitor(R) (atorvastatin). In previous clinical
trials, varespladib, a potent and highly selective inhibitor of secretory
phospholipase A2 (sPLA2), has demonstrated marked improvements in
sovereign markers of cardiovascular risk including, a near complete
suppression of the target enzyme sPLA2, a clinically meaningful and
statistically meaning reduction in "bad" LDL cholesterol, and a

opportunity to develop a first-in-class merchandise targeting a
life-threatening coronary thrombosis event for which thither are limited therapeutic
options."

"Based upon the success of varespladib in two previous Phase II
clinical trials in patients with cardiovascular disease in which it
demonstrated lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory benefits, we look forward
to further evaluating the impact of varespladib on the hyper-inflammatory
state presented by ACS patients," said Dr. James Pennington, Executive Vice

Kids Buy Violent Games Through Online Auction Sites

Children are able to buy violent video games illegally by using internet auction sites such as eBay, a new study has found.

An investigation by the Welsh Heads of Trading Standards (WHOTS) discovered significant numbers of internet traders are selling X-rated games to youngster through online auctions.

And with violent games such as Grand Theft Auto IV increasingly linked with rising crime among Britain's youth, the study will come as worrying reading to parents and police alike.

The Trading Standards Services at six local authorities across Wales found that almost 90 per cent of internet traders sold 18-rated games to underage children.

A volunteer aged between 12 and 16 attempted to buy 18-rated video games on the internet using postal orders during the trial.

Of the 44 test purchases attempted, 38 traders sold the games to the children assisting the authorities. This represents a failure rate of 86 per cent.

Lee Jones, acting head of Trading Standards, Bridgend County borough council, said the survey showed the ease with which children can buy videogames for which they are too young.

"Traders who use auction sites and accept postal orders as payment have no method of determining whether the person they are selling to is aged 18 or over," he added.

And Brandon Cook, Trading Standards Institute (TSI) lead officer for age-restricted sales, said online sellers had "a responsibility to make sure they have methods in place to avoid breaking the law by making underage sales".

"If traders cannot be sure the person they are selling to is over 18, then they should not be selling," he went on.

"There are a number of companies out there that will run age checks on customers for internet traders. These services are very quick and relatively cheap."

According to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), games and DVDs classified at 15 and 18 "will focus on "strong violence with realistic injury detail, strong horror, language, sex references and depictions of sexual activity".

Ham Sandwich - Carry the Meek

While some sound the death-knell for the album ever louder, there are still plenty whose records drown it out. Like this one.
Freed from the constraints of cool moniker syndrome and worrying whether it fits the sound, Kells quintet Ham Sandwich turn in as assured and alluring a debut as you'll get between now and the turkey.
Two singers, the right mix of poignancy and darkness in its break-up narrative and some well-timed instrument punishment give 'Carry the Meek' a primitive power which few can summon well - the line "I think I got my hearing back" is very apt, but there's a lot done to your heart too.
And, like the most dysfunctional of couplings, you'll keep coming back. Some will find the name unforgivable, but some of the music is unforgettable.

Britain's Got Talent: Simon Cowell: 'Faryl Smith Will Earn 20m Before She's 20'

Simon CowelSimon Cowell believes 12-year-old Britain's Got Talent star Faryl Smith will earn 20million before she's 20.

Cowell last night hailed the youngster -- who he has primed for international superstardom -- as better than opera star Katherine Jenkins -- who is Faryl's idol -- and Charlotte Church.

Simon says, "I know she says Katherine is her idol but she is far better than her. She is by far the most talented youngster I've ever heard. When she opens her mouth her voice is just incredible.

"We've uncovered an absolutely massive singing talent. Full stop."

Faryl's parents have already been bombarded with offers from showbiz agents and fixers. But her family want Cowell -- who who propelled X Factor winner Leona Lewis to stardom in the US -- to mastermind her career.

Faryl went into last night's finale as runaway bookies favourite for the show's 100,000 prize and star billing at the Royal Variety Show ahead of string quartet Escala and choirboy Andrew Johnston.

But, regardless of the outcome, Cowell has been in talks to tie Faryl to a multi-million pound deal.

And Faryl's dad Tony has revealed how he and wife Linda have talked about signing Faryl to Cowell's SyCo record company, an offshoot of Sony BMG. Health and safety officer Tony, 49, told the Sunday Mirror newspaper, "A lot of people have shown interest in Faryl. It's been difficult to make decisions because we don't know much about the music industry. But I'd have to listen if it was Simon Cowell telling me my daughter was special and had big potential.

"I can't really say too much at this stage. But we're not interested in speaking to anyone else now."

Asked how she will celebrate her success, Faryl said, "I'm going to go on a massive shopping spree in TopShop and New Look.

"I'm going to take my two best friends out and spend as much as I can. We'll probably have a big party too."

However, she is keen to distance herself from former child star Charlotte Church, who was also discovered on a TV talent search aged 12 -- and is now worth an estimated 12 million.

"I can see why people compare us," she said. "But Charlotte has gone down the pop route and I want to stick with classical music."

Man dressed as Darth Vader attacked Jedis

A man has received a suspended sentence for assaulting the founders of Britain's first Jedi church while dressed as Darth Vader.

Wearing a garbage bag as a cape to complete his Star Wars-themed costume, Arwel Wynne Hughes used a metal crutch to hit Barney Jones, also known as Master Jonba Hehol, on the head, the Associated Press reported.

Mr Hughes, 27, also attacked Jones' cousin Michael Jones, known as Master Mormi Hehol, and wounded him in the thigh, a British court was told.

Alcohol was a likely factor behind the assault, since Hughes claimed he couldn't remember what happened because he had consumed most of 10 litre box of wine before.

The incident was caught on a video camera, which the two Jedi masters had set up to film themselves in a light sabre battle.

"Darth Vader! Jedis!" Hughes yelled as he came on to the scene.

Hughes was given a suspended sentence of two months in jail and a £260 fine.

Jones' Church of Jediism, a philosophy gleaned from the popular Star Wars movies, was set up last year and has about 30 members.

Enon is the trio of John Schmersal (world Health Organization was involved with Brainiac and John Stuart Mill) and Rick Lee and Steve Calhoon (both of Skeleton Key). Like groups such as Olivia Tremor Control, they're concerned in exploring that wide territory between pop/rock songs and dissonance, employing a wealth of samples, industrial sound processing, and percussion section that veers toward crockery-smashing fogginess. Not as inclined toward melodies of the 1960s and '70s as groups like Olivia Tremor Control are, at that place are yet a great deal pensive, flake pop tunes lurking in their swathe of profound. Enon, originally the project of Schmersal alone, put out a distich of indie singles ahead Schmersal moved to New York to link up with Calhoon and Lee. Calhoon left the banding and was replaced by Toko Yasuda; the accession of Matt Schulz made the grouping a quartet. Their debut album, Believo!, was released in 2000, and proved that the card was a successful one. High Society followed in 2002, with the same players merely a more poppy, uptempo sound. Combs Shocked By Biggie Biopic Cast's Likeness

Rap mogul SEAN 'DIDDY' COMBS has lavished praise on the cast of the upcoming NOTORIOUS B.I.G. biopic, because the actors bear an uncanny resemblance to the hip-hop stars they portray on screen.
The film, Notorious, tells the story of the late rapper's rise to stardom in the mid-1990s, and features portrayals of stars like Lil' Kim, Tupac Shakur, and Combs himself.
And, after a visit to the movie's set, the 38-year-old came away especially impressed by actor Derek Luke, who has been cast as Diddy.
He tells MTV.com, "It's rare that you get a movie made about you when you're still relevant, but (they) took on the challenge.
"People asked me years ago who you'd want to play me, and I said Derek Luke... So it was just destined. I got to see him do his thing, and it was scary for me. I had to leave, 'cause he was acting just like me."
But Combs reserved his highest praise for Jamal 'Gravy' Woolard, a young rapper who has landed the lead role.
He adds, "Gravy, the guy playing B.I.G., it was just too eerie for me to be on that. Gravy's killing it. If I tell you he's killing it, then that's all we need to say, you know what I'm saying? I don't think anybody could have done a better job."
Notorious B.I.G., real name Christopher Wallace, was gunned down after a Vibe magazine party in Los Angeles in 1997

Rihanna established herself big time in summer 2005 with her debut dash hit, "Pon de Replay," and continued to shew her smash hit potential in subsequent old age (e.g., "S.O.S.," 2006; "Umbrella," 2007). By the prison term of her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), she was a fully fledged external pop star with a regular presence atop the charts, from Germany to Japan. Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 20, 1988, in Saint Michael, Barbados, she always exhibited a special quality, fetching beaut and talent contests as a schoolchild. But because she lived on the passably remote island of Barbados in the West Indies, she never foresaw the sort of stardom that would later befall her.

That stardom came courtesy of a disastrous get together with a man named Evan Rogers. The New Yorker was vacationing in Barbados with his married woman, a native of the island, when somebody sour him on to Rihanna. Since Rogers had washed-out geezerhood producing pop artists -- including superstars like *NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Kelly Clarkson, Laura Pausini, and Rod Stewart -- he offered her the chance to record some euphony after he recognized her talent and potency. Along with Rogers' production better half, Carl Sturken (the other half of Syndicated Rhythm Productions), Rihanna recorded some demos that sparked the interest of the Carter Administration -- that is, new appointed Def Jam chairperson Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter. This lED to an tryout and, in turn, an on the spot offer to sign with Def Jam, which Rihanna indeed inked on the blot.

Come summer 2005, Def Jam rolled stunned "Pon de Replay," the lead single of Music of the Sun, which was produced well-nigh only by Rogers and Sturken and which synthesized Caribbean rhythms and beat generation with urban-pop songwriting. "Pon de Replay" caught fire almost immediately, climb all the way to issue two on The Billboard Hot one C and contesting the half-summer reign of Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" atop the chart, and this was before Euphony of the Sun regular had been released. The album spawned one other hit, "If It's Lovin' That You Want," which stony-broke the Top 40. Rihanna's followup album, A Girl Like Me, was a greater success, spawning trey big hits: a chart-topper ("S.O.S.") and two Top Tens ("Unfaithful," "Break off It Off").

Rihanna's third album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), continued her success and, more notably, signaled a change of counsel. Whereas her past two albums had been been unbalanced -- often weighed low by faceless balladry and canned Caribbean-isms -- Honest Girl Gone Bad was a topnotch dance-pop album. Moreover, it was amazingly solid, curvy with potential singles and easily enjoyable from beginning to end. Collaborators included Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Timbaland, and StarGate. The lead single, "Umbrella," shaft to number one and, for the third year in a row, was a potential drop "birdcall of the summer." By this point in time it was clear that Rihanna had suit one of the biggest singles artists of the mid-2000s.
